Saudi Arabia’s crown prince has made an emotional plea to women seeking a safe-haven for their families after a Saudi court banned the internet for women to use.
Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Tuesday called for women who wish to escape abusive husbands and family members to “stay away from these sites” as a way to “avoid their abuse.”
He was speaking during a visit to the U.S. and the kingdom has already banned access to many social media platforms.
In Saudi Arabia, it is not a crime to post or view explicit content on the internet.
However, a video posted on social media sites that promotes violence or sexual abuse against women is punishable by up to five years in prison.
The kingdom has been under the spotlight in recent weeks for its treatment of women and children.
The crown prince is the second member of his family to travel to the United States, following Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, who visited President Donald Trump in January.
